Legio II Augusta visit Ribchester
7th-8th July, 2007
Roman re-enactment society, Legio II Augusta paid their annual visit to Ribchester, with talks and displays on Roman life, military displays and a demonstration of Roman artillery. This year for the first time the programme included a cavalry display.
The displays included Roman crafts, Roman cooking and a Roman field hospital. A slave gave an enlightening talk on her life in slavery. The military display started with a demonstration of the equipment and tactics of a Roman auxiliary cavalry unit, including some frightening charges on the poor infantry.
The legionaries also demonstrated their equipment and tactics before showing off the artillery with a working bolt-thrower, or scorpion, and the ballista, firing an onion over the trees into the churchyard.
