Roman Roads Walk

19th August, 2007

Following on from Colin Hinkley's talk, Walking in the Footsteps of Agricola, he brought it to life by leading a walk around the village. The walk started at the Museum and took in the five major Roman roads that led from the village.

Starting at the Museum, the site of the Roman fort, we made our way through the churchyard and headed west along the road to Kirkham, following the track to Parsonage Farm and up on to Red Bank. Here we explored the possible routes, including what may be a Roman ford, before the road descends to Hothersall

Heading back towards the village, we made an impromptu visit to the Roman well in Peter Openshaw's garden and then went on to stand at a Roman crossroads, where the Manchester-Burrow road met the York-Kirkham road (now Blackburn Road).

We explored a possible route of the north-south road (the Roman M6) through an overgrown wood near Stydd before joining Stoneygate Lane at Cherry Yate.

Then it was over to the Ribchester-Lancaster road at Preston Road before finishing up with lunch at the White Bull.
